Jefferson said early on that his religion was a religion of one, but his writings and speech proved him more Deist than Christian. Later in life he became a Unitarian, and he didn't believe, ever, that you had to accept Jesus as your savior to get into heaven, which would pretty much eliminate him as a Christian. He didn't even believe Jesus to be anything but human. He had a respect for his moral philosophy, but not a respect of the religion built on him after his death. Barton likes to say he said himself he was a Christian, but the actual quote was "To the corruptions of Christianity I am indeed, opposed; but not to the
genuine precepts of Jesus himself. I am a Christian, in the only sense in which he wished any one to be; sincerely attached to his doctrines, in preference to all others; ascribing to himself every human excellence; and believing he never claimed any other." The definition of precepts is - a general rule intended to regulate behavior or thought.. In other words, Jesus's morality. Notice he says human, not deity, and the belief that he never meant to be cast as the gospel writers cast him. Notice also, he considered Christianity to have corrupted those precepts. There are a plethora of Jefferson's quotes that prove he had no fodness for the Christian religion. The Barton's and Federers and Kennedys of this world would rather people only hear the cherry picked quote "I am a Christian." which is, of course, a lie.

The evidence indicates that he didn't try to convert anyone to his religion, in fact he said his religion forbid it. He certainly wasn't a Christian in the evangelical sense, what makes you think he was?

So, despite all the evidence, you believe Jefferson, a Christian, wouldn't want the indias to be converted. Yes, makes lots of sense--not!
